Development of an open learning system to support the training for Khmer localization
Abstract:
As more and more Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) applications are being
localized into Khmer language, the training for Khmer Localization is becoming one
of the major keys affecting the FOSS movement in Cambodia.
In this work, we propose a system called an Open Learning System (OLS) to
support the training for Khmer Localization. A survey was needed in order to gather
necessary information from relevant stakeholders. This survey served as the
foundation to analyse, design and implement the main features and criteria of OLS in
order to provide an effective learning environment.
The main objectives of this study were: (1) to develop an OLS which has to
fully support the use of Khmer Unicode by using open source software; (2) to develop
training material which has to conform to the SCORM standard; and (3) to evaluate
the OLS by the instructors and learners.
We found that the OLS met our 3 main objectives. Therefore, the OLS was the
first online learning system that served as the first practical experience for educational
institutions in Cambodia in adopting this kind of system in order to be another choice
as well as face-to-face training. The use of FOSS is recommended to develop the
system to support the local language with high flexibility for changes whenever
Khmer Unicode problems occur.
