Abstract:
This study investigrated the production of activated carbon from Jatropha curcas L. seed coat by chemical activation method using sodium hydroxide solution (NaOH), phosphoric acid solution (H3PO4) and zinc chloride solution (ZnCl2) by weight. The production of activated carbon consisted of two- stage process. In this study, the effect of various activation parameters on activated carbon production was carried out. The variations included activating agent, activating temperature and time.
From the results, it was found that activated carbon using NaOH reagent. the optimum conditions using NaOH with ratio of Jatropha curcas L. seed coat char to NaOH of 1:1 by weight at 500 C, 60 minutes. Were these optained conditions yielded 60.24 percent of activated carbon with BET surface area of 730.20 m2/g with iodine number of 964.21 mg/g with and methylene blue number of 500.00 mg/g, respectively.
