Effects of organizing non-formal education activities based on participatory learning concept to develop emotional skills of children and youths in Bannkaruna Juvenile Vocational Training Centre for Boys
Abstract:
The purposes of this study were 1) to develop non-formal education activities based on participatory learning concept to develop emotional skills of children and youths in Bannkaruna Juvenile Vocational Training Centre for boys. 2) to compare the emotional skills of children and youths in Bannkaruna Juvenile Vocational Training Centre for boys before and after the experiment; 3) compare emotional skills of children and youths in Bannkaruna Juvenile Vocational Training Centre for boys between the controlled and the experimental group; 4) and to study participants satisfaction towards non-formal education activities after the experiment. The research methodology was quasi-experimental design. 40 youths in Bannkaruna Juvenile Vocational Training Centre for boys from 625 youths were selected to be the research samples. They had to take the attitude test in order to divided into 2 groups: 20 were in the experimental group and 20 were in the controlled group. The activities were organized for 50 hours in 8 days. The research instruments were the activities plan, the knowledge test, the attitude test, the behavior test, and the evaluation form. The data were analyzed by using means (x-bar), standard deviation (S.D.), and independent-samples t (t-test) at .05 level of significance with SPSS version 17.0 program The results were as follow 1. The developed non-formal education activities based on participatory learning concept to develop emotional skills served the needs of the children and youths in Bannkaruna Juvenile Vocational Training Centre for boys and enhanced the children and youths emotional skills: emotional quotient, emotional acceptance, and emotional control. 2. After the experiment, the mean scores in knowledge, attitude, and behavior of emotional skills of the experimental group were higher than the mean scores before the experiment at .05 level of significance. 3. After the experiment, the experimental group had means scores in knowledge, attitude, and behavior of emotional skills higher than the controlled group at .05 level of significance. 4. After participated in non formal education activities, most participants reported their satisfaction towards the activities at the highest level.
