Abstract:
The objectives of this thesis are to study the problems of production planning, and
to design the decision support system of production planning in the furnituremanufacturing
industry. The sample factory makes goods to order with the flow-shop
production mode. There is a variety of product patterns and designs.
According to the study result, the main problem of the sample factory was that the
order engagement was not compatible with the production capacity of the factory, which
caused the delivery delay, by 40 % in January 2005. In order to improve the Decision
Support System (DSS), the study thus focused on 4 factors: the production capacity,
the working-time standard, the expenses of labour and the development program used
for the production planning and DSS. The Heuristics method was used in this study to
find the mean flow time.
After the developed computer program had been applied for the sample factorys
production planning, it was found out that the First Come First Serve (FCFS) rule was
the most effective. Thus, FCFS method was used as the indicator of the decision
solution.
The study also reviewed that 2 out of 5 orders of January 2005, which followed
the normal working schedule, delayed for totally 3 days. The problem solution was
adjusting 1 of those 2 delayed orders to be an over-time schedule order. It led to the
on-time delivery deal, decreased the penalty fee by 10,000 B, but increased the labour
expense by 17,674.14 B. Such solution decreased totally by 33.40 % (8,864.86 B) per
order.
