Abstract:
The problem of mismatch between supply and requirement for
dentist in Thailand has been the under-supply of dentists for the
past 60 years. Prior to 1968, the number of new dentists entering
the workforce each year was below 50. A production plan (for 1996-
20D7) intended to solve this problem was proposed by the Ministry
of University Affairs. This study extends the projection of supply for
dentist using this production plan to 2030. An alternative production
plan is proposed and is used to project a supply for dentists to 2030,
as well. The appropriate range of requirements for dentists, to be
set as goals for supply projection, is determined by evaluating several
previous studies. This requirement for dentist is found to be between
about 7,000-8,000 people per one dentist. Supply projections using
the Ministry of University Affairs production plan and the alternative
proposed plan are then compared to the range of requirement. The
production plan for dentist by Ministry of University Affairs, which
increases the number of first year enrollments from 360 to 420
students per year, expands supply to reach the requirement range
by 2010. However, this supply continues to increase and becomes
a surplus after 2015. The proposed production plan, which maintains
the number of first year enrollments at 360 until 2019 and then
decreases it to 320 students from 2020 to 2030, projects a supply
that reaches the range of requirements in 2015, and stays in this
range for the entire projection period in a stable trend. Providing
that there is no major change in dentist requirements for the next 30
years, the current production plan of Ministry of University Affairs
will create a harmful state of dentist oversupply in 15 years; this
problem has an increasing trend through out the entire projection
period. The proposed plan, which slowly decreases the first year
enrollment rate over 20 years, is a suitable production plan for
dentists.
