Abstract: The authors describe the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease, including what is known about its causes based upon observational studies and preventive clinical trials. A short history of the early ideas about disease causation and the most prominent and influential studies is provided. A summary of the most important risk factors known to play roles in the causal pathway is also included. Finally, the logical extension of this risk factor knowledge (obtained primarily from epidemiologic studies) to public health programs aimed at reducing the impact of this disease in populations is discussed.
