Abstract:
Together with primary health care (PHC), primary environmental
care (PEC) has become one of the central foci in sustainability of
human health and survival. In rural communities of South Asian
countries, which have been densely populated and economically
retarded, the authors have begun community-oriented development
ecology (CODE) project with special interest in PHC and PEC.
According to the CODE questionnaire survey for 49 randomly
selected communities even in Bangladesh, where health effects of
arsenic from drinking water have become serious, the people
perceived risks from economic situation, such as poverty and
joblessness, more than those from health and/or environmental
circumstances. It is thus suggested that further studies are needed
to clarify the interrelationships among PHC, PEC and other
(particularly socioeconomic) aspects in consideration of action plans
for rural development.
