Abstract:
A country profile of Thailand and history of tobacco control actions
from 1974 to 1996 are presented. Analysis of important elements
of Thai tobacco control efforts including health education,legislation,
protection of nonsmoker's health, prevention of tobacco addition
among youth, prevention of smoking by Thai women, smoking
cessation, taxation, tobacco control networking and research is
provided.
Important lessons and some of the future obstacles to tobacco
control in Thailand are presented. Goals specific to the Thai context
are suggested. This historical overview and projection of future
actions concludes with a call for heightened action by health
professionals everywhere.
