Effects of air pollutants upon the pulmonary functions in Thai traffic police

Abstract: Pulmonary diseases are one of the main problems found in Bangkokians today. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the pulmonary function of the air pollutant exposures of Thai traffic police officers in the Bangkok metropolis. Two hundred and ten police officers were divided into two groups. Group I consisted of one hundred and seven subjects who worked in high polluted areas with a pollutant value of 0.33 mg/m3*** while the one hundred and three subjects in group II worked in polluted areas lower than 0.33 mg/m3.*** The study was made using questionnaires that mainly consisted of personal histories, lifestyles and respiratory symptoms that were experienced while working. The subjects were randomly selected to perform, either the vital capacity measured with a spirometer or chest expansion with a tape levelled at the xiphoid process as the recording site in the standing position. The complete data was analysed by using the unpaired Student's Hest. The outcome of the comparison of groups I and II showed no significance in age, weight and height (p>0.05). The results showed that the mean values of vital capacity and chest expansion in group I were, 3.18±0.27 L. and 5.34±0.71 cm, whilst the mean values were 3.32±0.26 L. and 5.66±0.68 cm, in group II. Statistically there were significant differences in the vital capacity and chest expansion between both groups (p<0.05) This study indicated that the exposure to high value air pollution significantly decreases the pulmonary function parameters such as vital capacity and chest expansion. It may resulted from the tracheobronchial epithelium irritability and mucociliary dysfunction.
