The Study of Students' Procsses Undertaken to Conduct a Video Project in English for Communication Course
Abstract:
The rationale of study came from my experience whereby my students could not
apply the knowledge which they had learnt in the class in situations in speaking tests. It
seemed that the knowledge could not be recalled because they never used what they
learned in real life and eventually forgot it after the end of semester.
To improve language abilities of Civil Aviation Training Center first-year students, the
researcher used project-based learning as a tool. Project-based learning allowed the
students to design tasks and work on them while the teacher was only their consultant.
The change of roles between the teacher and the students could motivate the students
because they could take on all of the responsibilities and conduct the project by
Themselves.
This study was quasi-experimental research. The subjects in this study were two mixed-
ability groups of five students each, named "The Stranger" and "The Dream". They
were first-year students of Civil Aviation Training Center who attened English for
Communication II class in semester 2/2010. There were two research instruments used
in the study which were semi-structured interview and observation to discover what
processes they conducted to do their video project.
The results of the study indicated that there were three steps of doing a video project:
before-doing-project stage, during-doing-project stage, and presentation stage. The
before-doing-project stage was divided into three steps: task preparation, language
preparation and project preparation. The teacher and the students worked together to get
ready for doing-project. The during-doing-project stage was divided into eight steps:
choosing members, setting roles of the members, choosing the story and theme,
preparing for technical support, planning for shooting video, dealing with dialogues,
shooting movie, and editing video. The presentation stage was divided into three steps:
mointoring, presenting, and evaluating project. The benefits of doing-project were it
could promote collaborative learning, increase language abilities, increase cognitive
skills, assist in getting new wxperience and knowledge, and promote the students to be
the autonomous learners.
