Parenting stress among Vietnamese mothers of young children with acute illness
Abstract:
The purpose of this descriptive study was to describe parenting stress among Vietnamese mothers who have young children with acute illness. Convenience sample
included 112 mothers who brought their young ill children to Thai Nguyen general hospital, Vietnam during December 2010 to February 2011. Data were collected by using self-report of the demographic questionnaire and the Parenting Stress Index
(PSI-SF) scale. After back translation, internal consistency reliability of the PSI-SF was .85. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test and oneway ANOVA. Results revealed that mean total score of parenting stress was 118.30 (SD = 11.45). For its subscales, mean score of the Parental Distress subscale (PD) was 40.09 (SD = 4.38), the Parent-Child Dysfunctional Interaction subscale (P-CDI) was 39.89
(SD = 3.95), and the Difficult Child subscale (DC) was 38.32 (S.D. = 4.18). However, there were no significant differences of the mothers parenting stress, both total score and all three subscales (PD, P-CDI, DC), with different demographic variables (including age, family income, family type, number of children in the family, experience of rearing young children and level of education) and childs characteristics (including age, gender and severity of illness). These findings suggest
that nurses should provide and/ or support nursing intervention to minimize parenting stress to all mothers of children with acute illness with disregard to the mothers or the childs demographic characteristics.
