Factors associated with sexual relationship among high school female students in Angthong province
Abstract:
Sexual behavior among adolescents in Thailand has been increasing
rapidly due to vast physical, mental, and emotional changes. Adolescents have become
more interested in sex, sexually arousing magazines or movies, media such as
pornography, suggestive clothing, or drugs which may stimulate sexual arousal, These
factors, together with knowledge and attitude towards sex, drive adolescents to seek
sexual relationships.
This data is a cross-sectional survey of sexual relationships and related
factors among 200 female high school students in co-ed schools in Angthong
province. Data was collected from June 15th to July 31st, 2009, by using
self-administrated questionnaires. Statistical analyses used were descriptive statistics,
Chi-square test, and Stepwise Multiple Regression Analysis.
Results revealed that 39% of female high school students in Angthong
have had sexual relationships. The mean age of their first sexual relationship was
15.03 years old. The partner in their first sexual relationship was their lover (85.9 %).
The main reason for having the first sexual relationship was love (30.77%). The
factors that were significantly related to having sexual relationships were monthly
allowance received, receiving sexual education, and Internet sex chat. 10.5% of
adolescents have had coitus. The mean age of first coitus was 15.57 years old. The
partner for first coitus was their lover (95.2%). Regarding reasons for having coitus for
the first time , 52.4 % reported love. The factors that were significantly associated
with coitus were age, number of siblings, sexual behavior (coitus) of close friends,
attitude toward sex, source of sexual information, and Internet sex chat.
In conclusion, the rate of sexual relationships among adolescents in
Angthong province was not high. It is rather difficult to prevent sexual relationships
among adolescents due to socioeconomic factors. Factors which can prevent sexual
relationships may include proper spending of leisure time, proper selection of friends,
and proper use of the Internet. The role of family and school should be emphasized
and cooperation should be enhanced.
