Eco-efficency evaluation of hospital in Ho Chi Minh city Vietnam
Abstract:
Environmental and health issues have grown as a major concern within the general public in Vietnam, especially in Ho Chi Minh City. Hospitals operations generate a great deal of waste and consume a large amount of resources for their activities. Therefore, hospitals can play an important role in mitigating the socio-environmental impacts of the health sector by taking the opportunity to improve in order to help reduce costs, enhance quality, and also improve the health of people. Eco-efficiency is one of the environmental tools that could offer these opportunities by improving economic performance, as well as improving resource efficiency and lowering the environmental impact of hospital activities in Vietnam.
The purpose of this study is to assess the present eco-efficiency performance in some specific business functions, analyze the eco-efficiency indicators for hospitals, and identify the eco-efficiency trends of hospital activities. The research objectives were approached through a case study at Thong Nhat general hospital, a representative government hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. The study was carried out by using quantitative methods for data analysis of the service, consumption and emission in the past 5 years (from 2004 to 2008) at Thong Nhat Hospital. The result of assessment revealed that the current eco-efficiency activities of Thong Nhat Hospital are at the coping level. The eco-efficiency ratios revealed that the eco-efficiency of energy, water consumption indicators as well as the CO2 emission indicators decreased from 2004 to 2006, and then increased from 2007 to 2008. Meanwhile, the waste generation indicator increased from 2004 to 2007 and decreased from 2007 to 2008. The analysis of the snapshot graphs showed that the eco-efficiency trend of indicators shifted from half non-eco-efficient (2004-2006) to full eco-efficient (2007-2008) because of the change in hospitals laundry services.
This research can provide a basic framework for eco-efficiency evaluations of hospitals and hence would help expand the concept of eco-efficiency to the health sector
