A study of depression in schizophrenic patients in the outpatient department of Loei Rajanagarindra : psychiatric hospital
Abstract:
This research was a descriptive and cross sectional study whose objective
was to study the prevalence of depression and factors related to depression in
schizophrenic patients. These factors were personal factors, social support factors and
stress conditions (within 1 month) before the evaluation. The subjects were
schizophrenic patients in the outpatient department of Loei Psychiatric Rajanakarindra
Psychiatric Hospital. The study was conducted by collecting data from questionnaires
distributed to 100 samples, both male and female, between the ages of 20 and 60.The
patients had scores equal to or less than 30 based on the Brief Psychiatric Rating
Scale. The Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale was used to measure their level of
depression.
The study found that the prevalence of depression was at 26%. 20% of the
patients had mild depression. 4% had moderate depression and 2% had severe
depression. There were 12 factors related to their depression with statistical
significance of P <.01. The 12 factors were personal and social support factors,
income from their own work performance, income adequacy, no physical disease, no
side effects from antipsychotic drugs, a good relationship with family members and
persons whom they were living with, peaceful relationships in their family, low rate of
schizophrenia in relatives and good source of social support. These were considered to
be positive factors. The negative factors were gender difference, educational level,
duration of illness, and antipsychotic drug groups. The factors regarding stress
conditions (within 1 month) have statistical significance of P <.05.
The results of this study found that there are several factors related to the
schizophrenic, both positive and negative. This will finally lead to understanding
the specific contexts of each region and culture and to plan how relatives and medical
practitioners can treat and take care of schizophrenics in order to prevent depression.
