Web based case studies in low back pain : development and application test
Abstract:
This study aimed to develop a web based low back pain-related case study
program as a self-study teaching tool for physical therapy (PT) students.
This study was divided into three phases. The first phase was to survey problems with
practical work of PT students and clinical instructors at the Faculty of Physical Therapy and
Applied Movement Science, Mahidol University, Thailand. The second phase was to
develop the case study program. The third phase was the application test of the program in
69 third year PT students, divided into program use and control groups. Pre- and post-test
scores between groups were compared.
The results of the survey supported the need of developing teaching tools for selfstudy
alongside work. The case study program was then developed, containing of 10
simulated case studies. The results of the application test showed that the case study
program significantly improve the post-test scores for the program use group (p<.001).
Moreover, the post-test scores for the program use group were significantly higher
than those for the control group (p<.024). In conclusion, the case study program was
able to improve the learners knowledge. It should be used in conjunction with
practical work.
