The opinion of correctional officers towards restorative justice applied in department of corrections in Thailand
Abstract:
The objective of this investigation was to ascertain opinions of correctional officers
who work in prisons regarding Restorative Justice applied in the Department of Corrections in
Thailand. A sample of 364 correctional officers working in prisons were surveyed ,sets of
questionnaires were used in data collection for a quantitative method. SPSS+PC was
used in analysis and the statistical applications were frequency, percentage, mean,
standard deviation , one-way ANOVA and the Scheffés multiple regression analysis.
Findings were as follows:
Most correctional officers commented that the Restorative Justice would
develop the corrections because it improved offenders by make them conscious of
victims pain. The aim was for victims to accept and forgive offenders when they
repented and agreed to repay either by money or by other deeds. The fund for victims
created harmony, which led to justice and reconciliation in the Thai societies.
Repentance helped prisoners return to societies and never repeat offenses after
discharge. Repentance of prisoners, forgiveness of victims, return to societies and
never repeat offenses showed that the prison had been successful in rehabilitation.
Most agreed that failure in rehabilitation was caused by the shortage of budget. They
also agreed that a successful Restorative Justice came first from the precise
understanding of the correctional officers with diverse programs well organized to
meet each type of prisoner.
These findings were applicable in developing jobs of the Restorative Justice applied in
the Department of Corrections. The opinions of the correctional officers toward Restorative
Justice applied in the Department of Corrections in Thailand were indispensable so that the
Department could organize knowledge training for the correctional officers viable to work
accurately and efficiently
