Factors related to role performance in occupational disease prevention of nurses in health centers department of health Bangkok metropolitan administration
Abstract:
This descriptive research aimed to explore factors related to preventing
occupational illness by nurses working in community. Knowledge related to
occupational illness, motivation factors (recognition, work itself, responsibility,
advancement, and growth), hygiene factors (policy and administration, interpersonal
relation, and working condition) role perception and role performance in preventing
occupational illness were examined from 149 nurses working in public health centers in
Bangkok by using self-administrative questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and multiple
regression analysis were used for data analysis.
Results showed that nurses had role perception in preventing occupational
illnesses at moderate level (M = 3.57, SD = 0.88), while the performed role at low level
(M = 1.96, SD = 0.84). Factors related to performed role of illnesses were recognition,
work itself, responsibility, advancement, and growth), hygiene factors (policy and
administration, responsibility, working condition, and knowledge of occupational
disease prevention. Altogether these factors could explain 28 % of variance in role
performance in occupational disease prevention.
The findings suggest that to ensure the health and safety of informal workers
working in community, the roles of community health nurses in preventing
occupational illness should be enhanced. Public health center should develop roles in
preventing occupational illness. Administration and resources to support the
occupational health services in community should also be provided.
