Geo-informatics technology for age-class identification of para rubber plantation in Krabi province
Abstract:
The objectives of the study were to establish a model for age-class
identification of Para rubber and estimate the biomass of the Para rubber plantations
in Krabi Province by applying Geo-Information Technology. Geo-Information
Technology consists of Remote Sensing (RS), Global Positioning System (GPS), and
Geographic Information System (GIS). Water Index (WI), Bare Soil Index (BI),
Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and Advance Vegetation Index
(AVI) were also employed to help identify the stages of Para rubber by using logical
operation. While an allometric equation was used to estimate the biomass (stem,
leaf, branch and roots) of Para rubber plantation.
Four stages of Para rubber were identified: Young stage (1-7 years old),
Harvest stage (>7-20 years old), Mature stage (>20-24 years old), and Logging stage
(more than 24 years old).
Accuracy assessment for age-class identification of Para rubber for the four
stages showed percentage accuracy of 65.95%, 69.62%, 70.83% and 61.11% for
young stage, harvest stage, mature stage and logging stage, respectively.
Furthermore, the overall accuracy of the classification was about 67.85%. The area
of Para rubber represents 12.81% of the total area of Krabi province. The estimated
biomass of all Para rubber plantations was 10,603,272.879 tons.
