The influence of marital relationship, complications during pregnancy, and separation time on maternal-newborn attachment in postpartum mothers
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the predictive power of maternal
age, educational levels, family income, marital relationship, complications during
pregnancy, and separation time on maternal-newborn attachment. The sample
composed of 110 postpartum mothers who gave birth through the vagina at
Sappasithiprasong Hospital Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand. The data were collected
when the mothers were 36-48 hours postpartum by using three questionnaires, a
demographics, marital relationship and maternal-newborn attachment questionnaire.
Data were analyzed by multiple regression
The results of the study revealed that most postpartum mothers demonstrated
good marital relationship and high level of maternal-newborn attachment. The
stepwise multiple regression indicated that 13.3 percent of variance in maternalnewborn
attachment was accounted for by marital relationship (p<0.001).
The results suggest that nurses should assess marital relationship of the couple
in order to pay attention on maternal-newborn attachment in mothers with poor marital
relationship.
