Household production resources, population dynamics and land use / land cover change in rural northeast villages, Thailand
Abstract:
This study examines the role of population dynamics in rural households, such
as fertility, mortality, and out-migration in agricultural land use and land cover
change. The results show that population events which occur in households have an
effect on decision making to use the land for agriculture. For example, death and outmigration
events in households reduce the probability of agricultural land use.
Moreover, out-migration and the proportion of the household engaged in agriculture
are important factors to determine land use and land cover change.
The focus is on population dynamics, household factors, village factors, and
land parcel factors. The study includes two parts, an examination of agricultural land
use and on land cover change. Both results in combination explain land use and land
cover change in the rice culture society in the Northeast region of Thailand. The
relationships between out-migration and the proportion of the household engaged in
agriculture with land use and land cover change are interesting. Out-migration is an
obstacle to cultivation and impels land cover change. The proportion of the household
engaged in agriculture has more effect than the other variables on using land for
agriculture and reserve land cover change. Furthermore, the policy makers have to be
concerned about the influence of population dynamics, household factors, village
factors, and parcel factors when creating promotions for the agricultural land use plan
