The efficacy of Glycerine Payayor in prevention and relief of oral mucositis among patients with cancer receiving chemotherapy
Abstract:
The randomized cross-over research design was used to study the efficacy of
glycerine Payayor in prevention and relief of oral mucositis in cancer patients
receiving chemotherapy. The sample consisted of sixty-five patients with cancer who
received chemotherapy in two short stays under serviced settings at a university
tertiary care hospital, Bangkok, Thailand, between May and August 2005. Subjects
were purposively selected according to the pre-determined criteria. Equal numbers
were randomly selected to start with either experimental period or control period for
the first chemotherapy study course and vice versa for the next consecutive course.
The experimental period was treated with glycerine with Payayor, while the control
period was treated with a placebo, glycerine without Payayor. Glycerine Payayor had,
thus, been registered for standardized preparation. Two drops of the solution, five
times a day, were applied after 24 hours of chemotherapy session by dripping into the
mouth or upon the lesion. Thereafter, oral status was self recorded in a checklist form
following the instruction, once a day, then grading of oral mucositis was performed by
the researcher according to WHO criteria.
It was found that during the experimental period, the incidence (7.69 vs
90.77%), duration (2.40±0.55vs8.37±2.10) and severity (1.00±0 vs1.29±0.47) of oral
mucositis were significantly less while the onset (5.80±1.09 vs 3.12±0.49)was later
than in the control period (p<.001). Significantly higher scores of satisfaction than the
use of the placebo were also shown (p<.05). Glycerine Payayor oral drops were found
to be an inexpensive Thai finished herbal product without any adverse reaction.
Thus, glycerine Payayor is highly recommended for prevention and relief of oral
mucositis related to chemotherapy in adult cancer patients.
