Factors associated with self-care behavior of andropausal men : a case study of non commission policemen in Bangkok Metropolis
Abstract:
The objective of this cross-sectional research was to explore self-care
behavior and factors associated with self-care behavior of andropausal men.
Subjects were 360 non-commission policemen in Bangkok Metropolis aged 40 - 59
years . The data were collected by using questionnaires, during November 10 to
December 26, 2003. Data were analysed using frequency, percentage, mean,
standard deviation, Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient, and Stepwise
Multiple Regression, with significant level at p-value < 0.05.
Results revealed that 47 % had a low level of self-care behavior; 56% had
lack of high calcium food consumption; 46% had non-regular exercise; and 77% had
not having prostate gland examination regularly. Approximately 11% of the subjects
had andropausal symptoms, using PADAM score. Significant correlation was found
between age, education, self-care attitude, partial androgen deficiency, social
support and self-care behavior. Social support, age, and partial androgen
deficiency could predict self-care behavior of andropausal men by 36%.
In conclusion, almost half of the subjects reported a low level of self-care
behavior. Three significant factors related to low level of self-care behavior were
social support, age, and partial androgen deficiency.
Based on this study, it is recommended that proper self-care behavior of
adropausal men should be promoted through social support activity, such as proving
the necessary information and guidance through various media and close persons;
andropausal men should be encouraged to have self-care behavior from the early
stage of andropause; special guidance should be provided for those with serious
complications of partial androgen deficiency. The recommended self- care behavior
includes increased exercise, calcium consumption, and regular prostate gland
examination
