Factors related to health promoting behaviors among Thai middle-aged men in Pathumthani province
Abstract:
This research studied the factors related to health promoting behaviors among
middle-aged men. The sample consisted of 285 middle-aged men aged between
40–59 years old, living in Pathumthani province. A questionnaire was used for data
collection. Data were analysed using mean, percentage, Chi- square, Pearson’s
product moment coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression analysis.
Results showed that most middle-aged men had overall health promoting
behaviors at a moderate level. Overall, middle-aged men had health promoting
behavior more closely related to nutrition, interpersonal relations, and self
actualization than to stress management, physical activity, and health responsibility
(x = 2.82, 2.81, 2.79, 2.57, 2.46, and 2.17, respectively). There were significant
relationships between living community, education level, occupation, income,
adequacy of income, attitude toward health promoting behaviors, availability of health
care resources, accessibility to health care resources, accessibility for using health
care resources, and social support, and health promoting behaviors (p–value < 0.05).
The results also showed that social support, accessibility to health care resources,
attitude toward health promoting behaviors, living community, and adequacy of
income could altogether predict 41.8 % of variance in health promoting behaviors.
The results of this study will provide useful information for public health staff to
strengthen health education and motivate middle-aged men to accurately perceive
their health problems and promote their health. These aims could be achieved by
arranging appropriate, accessible health promoting services and family participation
in the service.
