Organization of training curriculum : orientation and mobility (O&M) with white canes
Abstract:
The objective of this research was to formulate and evaluate suitability of the
training curriculum on Orientation and Mobility with white canes. There were 5 research
steps as follows: 1) Preparation for organization of the training curriculum by surveying the
training needs of 350 people whose work involved visually impaired people in the Blind
People’s Teaching School, Special Education Centre, Blind People’s Occupation Training
Centre, Foundations, and other agencies which gave special education services to visually
impaired people, 163 people returned the completed questionnaires to the researcher;
2) organization of the training curriculum by developing structures and elements of the
training curriculum, which comprised principles, objectives, structures, explanation of each
subject, training guidelines, devices, result measurement and evaluation model, curriculum
passing criteria, and curriculum application guidelines; 3) experiment of the curriculum with
10 people at Ratchsuda College, Mahidol University for 5 days; 4) Evaluation of the
curriculum application by knowledge Test Form, observation of practice, and the Satisfaction
Evaluation Form on the training curriculum, the researcher analyzed data by using
Descriptive Statistic such as Percentage, Mean, Mode and t-test; 5) improvement of the
curriculum by adapting expressions.
The research results found that the training participants had more knowledge and
understanding at the significant level of 0.01. The training participants thought that the
training curriculum was most suitable for people whose work involved visually impaired
people. They were most satisfied with the training curriculum. As for the research
recommendations, there should be development of the training curriculum on Orientation and
Mobility with white canes by using program training sets such as videos, compact discs, and
documents for dissemination of the curriculum.
