The participation of labour in trade union for prevention of an unsafe workplace environment : a case study among metal product machine and equipment manufacturing industry
Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to look at union participation in preventing an
unsafe workplace environment in four factories involved in metal, machine, and
equipment production and the result, project plan and policy of participation for
prevention by their trade union. The study was made using in depth interview with
twenty-seven leaders who have been working in the trade union. Group data was
statistically delineated through percentage, mean, standard deviation and qualitative
methodology.
The results of this research revealed that the participation of the trade union
was at a high level. On each issue it was found that the trade union had mostly
participated in decision making and activities planning at 86.6 percent. Results of
prevention of an unsafe workplace environment, showed that the factories had a
decreasing percentage of accidents and usually provided medical checks of the
labourers. The management of the factory’s environment had been improved and more
have prevention activities campaigns. According to the project plan and prevention
policy of the factories for which the trade unions are in charge, it was found that the
trade union has participated in preventing an unsafe workplace. In addition, the
factories will be realizing their project plans of prevention and clarifying their road
maps. Finally, it was found that the factories are carrying out their project plans to a
greater extent than the trade union which has participated less.
The recommendation is for the trade union to look at the quality of their
participation in preventing an unsafe workplace rather than just the amount of
participation. Government and the trade union staff, as all well as others concerned in
charge of insuring work environment safety, should be encouraged to see that the
safety quality improves
