Result of muscle relaxation training to reduce stress of medical nurses at Siriraj Hospital
Abstract:
This Quasi-experimental research was conducted with the purpose of
studying the result of progressive muscular relaxation training that aimed to decrease
the stress of internal medicine nurses, Siriraj Hospital. The sampling group in this
study was internal medicine nurses of Siriraj Hospital. A random sampling method
was applied to categorize the thirty selected registered nurses into 2 groups, an
experimental and a controll group; with 15 registered nurses in each group.
Progressive muscle relaxation training was taught to the experimental group by an
instructor. The control group was given information on progressive muscular
relaxation by a handbook only. The study was done between July 24, 2003 and
January 30, 2004. The gathered data was analyzed with percentages, means, standard
deviation and t-test.
The level of stress in both group decreased after intervention. In the
experimental group; the level of stress decreased more than in the control group (pvalue
< 0.001). Though progressive muscle relaxation is very convenient to do, it was
found that to practice progressive muscle relaxation more efficiency, the nurses
needed to have an instructor to guide them through practice.(p-value < .01).
