Factors related to values of sexual risk behavior control among Thai secondary school students adolescents in Samutprakan
Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to study the values of sexual risk behavior control and
factors related to values of sexual risk behavior control among adolescents. The sample group
comprises 333 students, of which 145 are male and 188 are female, aged between 15-19 years
who study in upper secondary schools under the jurisdiction of the Office of the Committee
on Elementary Education, Muang District, Samutprakan Province. The research used a
snowball sampling by way of questionnaire on factors related to values of sexual risk behavior
control among adolescents. The general data analysis employs descriptive statistics in terms of
allocation of frequency, percentage and calculation of correlation value among factors using
Pearson product moment and stepwise multiple regression analysis.
The results of the research showed that the level of values of sexual risk behavior
control among adolescents in the sample group is high. The factors that have a correlation at a
significance level to the values of sexual risk behavior control are gender, educational goal,
sufficiency or level of satisfaction with regard to monthly allowance, sexual behaviors among
peers, level of acceptance of the family with regard to sexual behaviors of the students, and
sexual experience. The remaining factors, i.e. age, parental marital status, housing
accommodation, the amount of monthly allowance, knowledge about sex and exposure to
sexual or sex-related information from the media, do not have a correlation at a significance
level to values of sexual risk behavior control.
The recommendations, based on this research, were that parents or guardians need to
show their affection and concern to the adolescents and be ready to discuss and help solve the
problems that their children are facing. Parents or guardians should be reasonable and open to
communication and education about sex and sex-related matters. They should also pay
attention to their children’s choice of friends and spend quality time with their children to
inculcate proper sexual values in their children so as to prevent sexual risk behaviors.
Academic institutions can also initiate activities for adolescent students that will allow them to
effectively use their free time and promote proper sexual attitude in adolescent students. Peer
groups should be encouraged to take up useful activities such as sports, doing homework,
tutoring and reading, etc.
