Visit Laohasukpaisal. The exihibition design for Southeast Asia Museum . Master's Degree(Cultural Studies). Mahidol University. : Mahidol University, 2004.
Abstract:
The objective of this research was to design a permanent exhibition for the Southeast
Asia Museum that is housed in a building of the Institute of Asian Development for Public
Health, Mahidol University, Nakhonpathom.
The researcher used theories of exhibition design, a survey study and knowledge of
Southeast Asia to create exhibition material on the theme of “The Wealthy Land of Southeast
Asia”, comprising six parts : 1) Geography of Southeast Asia, 2) Ancient Kingdoms,
Architecture and Works of Art, 3) The Center of the World Economy, 4) Herbs and Folk
Medicine, 5) A Trace of Siam-Prosperity Land, and 6) Conclusion. Instead of displaying
objects, a thematic approach was decided upon as an appropriate way to present knowledge of
Southeast Asia. Through the display, the glory and significance of the cultures and natural
resources of Southeast Asia can be presented.
The study result consists of a concept for the exhibition design, summary content,
examples of presentation techniques, and perspective drawing design and detail of each part.
The researcher found two significant factors in the exhibition design : amount of information
and the proper type of museum building, which have to be considered prior to construction.
Consequently, there are more professionals concerned in the project such as script writers,
engineers, technicians and graphic designers. These people have to discuss the appropriate
composition that motivates people to have interest in the exhibition, gain knowledge along the
lines of the museum mission while considering the creation of an exhibition that is safe for
museum goers. In addition, the researcher had some recommendations for the Southeast Asia
Museum construction and guidance for further study in exhibition design.
