A compararitive study the social and health of regular and irregular participated in an old peoples's club
Abstract:
This study compared the levels of perceived health status, perceived benefits
of participation, social support, and health-promoting behaviors between regular
participants and irregular participants in the older people,s club in Pitsanuloke
province. The samples were recruited from 342 members at an older people,s club at
Boromrajchonni Buddhachinaraj Nursing College by using systematic sampling
method. There were 102 participants in each group. Data were collected through
interviews consisted of five parts: demographic data, health-promoting lifestyle profile
II, short form 36 health survey, perceived benefit of participation questionnaire, and
personal resource questionnaire. The data was analyzed by descriptive statistics and
independent t-test.
The mean scores for both groups in perceived health status, both in general
perception and physical functioning were high. This was also the case for social
support. However, the mean scores in perceived benefits of participation and healthpromoting
behaviors were high in the regularly participating group but only moderate
in the irregularly participating group. In addition, the mean scores on perceived health
status, perceived benefits of participation, social support, and health-promoting
behaviors of the regular participants were statistically significantly higher than those
of the irregular participants.
This suggest old people would benefit by participating regularly in an older
people,s club. The results of this thesis could serve as a guideline for nurse and health
care providers in promoting regular participation in older people,s clubs for the
benefits in health and social support that this provides.
