Health education program to promote self-care behavior among women with modified radical mastectomy attending at Ramathibodi Hospital
Abstract:
This quasi-experimental one group pre-test post-test research aimed to study the effectiveness of a health education program to promote self-care behavior among women with modified radical mastectomy attending Ramathibodi Hospital. The sample consisted of 30 patients who received modified radical mastectomy and were selected by purposive sampling. Thirty subjects were assigned to the experimental group. The experimental group received a health education program. Data were collected using questionnaires regarding socio-demographic data,
knowledge about breast cancer, self-care and treatment, perceived self-efficacy, outcome expectation on self-care behavior, and coping management. In order to confirm the patients self-care behavior, the patients themselves recorded data regarding appointment keeping, and complications. Data were collected 2 times, before and after the education program. The results of the study indicated that after the program, the experimental groups knowledge about breast cancer, self-care and treatment, perceived self-efficacy, outcome expectation on self-care behavior and coping management, were statistically and significantly higher than those before the program. The results of this research showed that a health education program applying Social Cognitive Theory was effective increasing knowledge about breast cancer self-care and treatment and a proper self-care behaviors of the experimental group leading to decreased complications. It is recommended that this type of the program should be applied to other surgical clinics to enhance patients self-care and compliance, in order to get effective and sustainable patients self-care behaviors."
