Comparision of multimedia teaching tools between macromedia flash and conventional program
Abstract:
This is an experimental research to develop a multimedia teaching tool to be
used in conjunction with lecture for the subject of “Emergency Anesthesia”.
It involves a comparative study of the learning progress achieved by students when
they are taught with the current multimedia program developed by PowerPoint and
with the new multimedia program developed by Macromedia Flash and also a
comparative study of medical students’ satisfaction with both types of multimedia.
Sample groups were 54 sixth-year medical students of the Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj
Hospital, Mahidol University in academic year 2002. Students were divided into 2
experiment groups and 2 control groups to be taught with the Macromedia Flash
multimedia program and the PowerPoint multimedia program respectively.
The groups did pre-test and post-test and answered a questionnaire after the
experiment with the multimedia program; the tests were designed to measure medical
students’ different learning achievements and the questionnaire was designed to
measure their satisfaction with the multimedia programs.
Results were statistically analysed and the following findings were obtained:
The Macromedia Flash multimedia program rendered learning achievement greater in
a statistically significant degree than the PowerPoint multimedia program, with
P-Value equals 0.05, and the former gave medical students greater satisfaction than
the latter, with the mean of medical students’ satisfaction equals 4.37 for the former
and 3.81 for the latter, and, lastly, medical students are satisfied with Macromedia
Flash multimedia program, saying that its mode of presentation is more interesting
and that such multimedia programs should be developed for the teaching of other
subjects as well.
