The effects of supportive educative nursing system on self care of pulmonary tuberculosis prisoners
Abstract:
This quasi-experimental research aimed to study the effects of the supportive
educative nursing system on knowledge, self-efficacy expectation and self-care
behaviors of pulmonary tuberculosis prisoners by applying the Orem Theory. The
sample of this study consisted of 75 prisoners with pulmonary tuberculosis who
registered for treatment at the Prison Health Unit of Correctional Institutions for Male
Drug Addicts. Thirty- seven prisoners were in the experimental group and thirty-eight
were in the comparison group. The experimental group received care from the
supportive-educative nursing system that applied four dimensions of Orem’s theory.
The care consisted of providing information about tuberculosis, group discussion and
demonstration, self-care behaviors guidance, providing psychological and economic
support and coordination for supportive environment to enhance self-care practice.
Subjects in the experimental group attended 3 sessions of the supportive-educative
nursing system. Each session included 10 participants and lasted 90 minutes while the
comparison group received regular nursing care. Data were collected by interview with
a questionnaire. The statistical analysis used were percentage, means, standard
deviation, t-test and paired t-test.
Results of this study indicated that at the end of the program, the experimental
group showed that their level of knowledge about TB, self-efficacy expectation and
self-care behaviors was significantly higher than that of the comparison group (pvalue<
0.05).
Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the supportiveeducative
nursing system used in this study enabled the infectious TB prisoners to
significantly improve their knowledge, self-efficacy expectation and self-care
behaviors, which will help to cut the chain of disease transmission and reduce the risk
of Multi-drug resistant disease. It is suggested that the supportive-educative nursing
system should be applied and extended to infectious prisoners in other prisons.
