Attitude toward the nursing profession of nursing midwife students in College of Health Technology Vientiane, Lao People's Democratic Republic
Abstract:
The purpose of this descriptive survey research was to study the perceptions
of nursing midwife students on the teachers, nursing curriculum, and learning
environment related to attitude toward the nursing midwife profession of students in
the College of Health Technology Vientiane, Lao People’s Democratic Republic.
The samples were 114 students. Data were collected using a self-administered
questionnaire. Statistical analysis used were percentage, mean, standard deviation,
chi-square analysis, and ANOVA.
Results revealed that most of the students had overall perception toward
teachers, nursing curriculum, and learning environment at a poor level with
percentage of 53.4, 61.8, and 74.9, respectively. For attitude toward nursing
profession, it was revealed that only 47.1 percent of nursing students had
unfavorable attitudes toward the profession. It was also found that students with
different reasons for enrolment had significantly different attitudes toward the
nursing profession (F = 5.50, p-value = .001). Results also showed that teacherstudent
relationship and teaching management had a significant relationship with
attitude toward the profession with the p-value of 0.006,and 0.045, respectively.
It is suggested that College of Health Technology Vientiane should aim to
improve the teacher quality teacher-student relationships, and teaching
management skills in order to promote the attitude toward the nursing profession of
nursing midwife students.
