A comparative study on the awareness of solid waste management among members of the council and board of the executive committee in subdistrict administrative organization level 1-5 a case study in Ayutthaya province
Abstract:
The purposes of this research were to study the level of awareness of solid waste
management and the factors affecting awareness of solid waste management according to
the members of the council and board of the executive committee in the Subdistrict
Administrative Organization (SAO) levels 1-5 in Ayutthaya Province. A questionnaire was
used with members of the council and board of the executive committee as a mean of data
collection. There were 451 cases and an in depth interview with the 27 chairmans of the
board of the executive committee or deputy in SAO, along with persons responsible for
solid waste management.
The results showed that members of the council and board of the executive
committee in SAO levels 1-5 had a score of awareness at a high level. Knowledge about
solid waste management, attitude about solid waste management, and level of severity of
the solid waste management problem and level of SAO were significant factors related to
awareness in solid waste management, at the 0.05 level. Knowledge about solid waste
management attitude about solid waste management and level of severity of solid waste
management problems had a positive relation, while the issue of politics concerning solid
waste management and levels of SAO had a negative relation with awareness of solid
waste management.
The result of the in depth interviews showed that SAO levels 1-2, which have a
solid waste management program already, ranked the importance of solid waste problems
first. On that same scale, SAO levels 3-5 showed an importance of solid waste problems at
5-6 to 9-10. However, the major concern was the fact that SAO levels 3-5 do not have a
solid waste management program.
