Factors affecting escape tendency of delinquent juveniles : a case study of offciers in the observation and protection centers and training school, Bangkok area
Abstract:
This study was to investigate factors affecting escape and truancy tendencies of delinquent juveniles in training centers for youth and to seek approaches to prevent their escape and solve this problem. Samples were 200 officers from Ban Karuna, Ban Mutita, Ban Ubekkha, and Ban Pranee. A questionnaire was used in data collection. Statistical applications were percentage, mean, standard deviation, ANOVA and MCA (Multiple Classification Analysis). Findings were as follows: According to the officers, factors affecting juvenile truancy were the stress of longing for a lover or most intimate friend, followed by stress of homesickness, longing for father or mother, and lack of fear of being punished by the centers. In cases of escape, they were persuaded by friends and they imitated juvenile escapees at other training centers. Differences in environmental conditions such as in walls, strength of the building or the training establishment facilitated escapes as did laxity in the watchfulness of the officers. It was found that juveniles from Ban Mutita had the highest escape tendency followed by Ban Ubekkha, Ban Karuna and Ban Pranee respectively. Juveniles were most watchful and sought ways to escape in order to stay outside by imitating friends (from other training centers) and persuading others to escape. It is recommended that strictness and attentiveness to juvenile behavior be intensified so as not to allow them to find techniques to escape. They should be watched more carefully. More education and activities should be provided to occupy them and to stop them from being bored and longing to leave the training centers.
