Relationship between menopausal perception, adaptation, and sexual life of andropausal men in Bangkok metropolitan
Abstract:
This descriptive study examined the relationship between adaptation,
perception on menopause and sexual life of andropausal men who live with their
spouses in Bangkok Metropolitan Thailand. A total of 400 andropausal men were
asked to complete a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and
analytical statistics.
Results showed that the andropausal men had an average age of 48 years
(SD=5.15) and average income of 16,408 baht. More than half of the subjects (51.5%)
had finished secondary school. Most of them (62.3%) had an annual physical
examination (medical check up). Common health problems were hypertension (27.6
%) and oral health (27.6 %). Most of them drank coffee (79%) and alcohol (74%),
used analgesic drugs (60%), and smoked cigarette (55 %.). Menopausal perception
and ability to adapt were strongly related to sexual life. The relationship between
educational level, income, adaptation, and sexual life was quite low (r = 0.52, p<0.05,
and r = 0.12, 0.12 p< 0.05 respectively).
Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that five factors including
interdependence, perception on menopause, self-concept, physiologic, and education
level can predict 46.4% of variance for sexual life.
The results of the study suggest that the ability to adapt is very important in
andropausal men. Nursing intervention should be developed focusing on
interdependence and menopausal perception to improve quality of sexual life and
family well-being.
