Effects of symptom management program on characteristics and severity of auditory hallucination in schizophrenic patients
Abstract:
This quasi – experimental research aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of
symptom management program on the characteristics and severity of auditory
hallucination in schizophrenic patients. Eighteen schizophrenic patients who attended
the Outpatient Clinic at Srithanya Hospital, Thailand, and who met the eligible criteria
were recruited. The sample was divided into experimental and control groups. The
experimental group attended the symptom management program once a week for 10
weeks, while the control group received standard care and usual hospital services. The
Symptom Management Model, developed by Dodd and her colleagues, was used as a
framework of this study. The member of both groups were interviewed using a
questionnaire to assess the characteristics and severity of their auditory hallucination.
Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and ANCOVA.
The results revealed that after participation in the program the score of
characteristics and severity of symptoms in the experimental group were statistically
significantly lower than prior to participation in the program ( p < .001). The score of
characteristics and severity of symptom in the experimental group was statistically
significantly lower than for the control group (p < .001). The findings of this
preliminary study have implications for clinical practice in developing a symptom
management program to attenuate distress from auditory hallucination in
schizophrenic patients through changing their cognitive perceptions and encouraging
them to use their own management strategies.
