The effects of a participatory learning sexual health education program on self-efficacy of sexual health behaviors among 6th grade students
Abstract:
This quasi-experimental research aimed to determine the effects of
participatory learning sexual health education program on self-efficacy of sexual
health behaviors among 6th grade students. Self-efficacy theory by Bandura was used
as the conceptual framework of the study. The study was concerned with the
protection of human rights. Every participant signed a consent form before the data
collection. The purposive samples were 61 students (31 and 30 students for the control
and the experimental group respectively) recruited from students attending 6th grade at
Khoathong school, Nakornsawan province. The control group received traditional
sexual education in school and the experimental group received a participatory
learning sexual health education program. The implementation period was 5 weeks in
the first semester. The participatory learning sexual health education program
consisted of 5 sessions; what about you when you are a teen, personal hygiene care,
interpersonal relationships, appropriate gender performance, and safe sex. The
questionnaires used in this study were as followed: Demographic Data Questionnaires
and Self-efficacy on Sexual Health Behaviors Questionnaires. The data were analyzed
with a statistical package in the term of descriptive statistics and grouped t-test.
The results of the study revealed that, the students who received participatory
learning sexual health education program had better self-efficacy on sexual health
behavior scores than those who received traditional sexual education in school with a
statistically significant difference (p< .001).
In conclusion, the participatory learning sexual health education program was
effective in increasing self-efficacy of sexual health behaviors. Therefore, the program
should be implemented on a sustained basis.
