Factors associated with use of condom to prevent sexually transmitted infections among male clients visiting sex service places in Bangkok
Abstract:
A condom is a very effective method of preventing sexually transmitted infections
(STIs), including acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). The purpose of this crosssectional
study was to find any associations between demographic factors, knowledge and
attitude towards use of condoms among male clients visiting sex service places in Bangkok.
The samples were 190 male clients willing to answer the questionnaires. The study was
conducted from March to April 2005. Statistics for analysis were descriptive statistics
including percentage, mean and standard deviation. Chi-square test was used for hypothesis
testing of association at the level of α = 0.05 using SPSS/PC statistical program.
The results revealed that most of the samples were single (59.5%), less than 30 years old
(56.3%), employees (41.6%), had a monthly income less than 20,000 baht (50.0%), and
graduated from college or high school (60.5%). Only 27.9% of samples used condom
regularly when having sexual intercourse with female sex workers, 68.4% seldomly used and
3.7% never used a condom .
Regarding knowledge on STIs, AIDS and use of condoms, 38.4% had good knowledge,
51.6 had a fair level of knowledge and 10% had a low level of knowledge. Regarding attitude
toward use of condoms, 30.7%, 66.7% and 2.6% had good, fair and poor attitudes
respectively. About associations between factors and use of condoms, educational level,
marital status, convenience and access to condoms and knowledge had statistically significant
associations with use of condoms.
In conclusion, this study found that most male clients visiting sex service places in
Bangkok were single ,of a younger age, lower income and middle level of education. The rate
of regular use of condoms during their visits was low. Improvement in education on selfcare,
sex education and good knowledge about STIs and AIDS as well as providing easy
accessible ways to acquire condoms will increase the use of condoms and help prevent the
spread of STIs and AIDS, in the especially high risk group of male clients visiting sex service
places.
