Factors influencing the awareness of urban pollution problems among students in faculties of communication arts, journalism and mass communication in Bangkok
Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to study factors influencing the
awareness of urban pollution problems among students in faculties of
communication arts, journalism and mass communications in Bangkok, Data was
collected by means of a questionnaire with 380 samples, and then analyzed by
means of percentage, mean, and standard deviation.
The results showed that 55.8 percent of the sample had a moderate level
of awareness of urban pollution problems. Factors influencing this awareness
included gender, knowledge of urban pollution problems, and follow-up of news
about urban pollution problems. Despite this, it should be noted that in terms of
the awareness of the need to do something about these problems just under 14
percent agreed at a high level that they would look for opportunities to express
themselves in ways that would help solve environmental problems and only 16
percent highly agreed that they wanted to participate in solving these problems.
The recommendations are that there should be stimulus for students to
become aware of environmental problems because this is a collective
responsibility. There should be an emphasis on media production relating to
environmental problems, focusing on TV because this is the most popular medium
with students but also for magazines, newspapers, radio and Internet which are in
the next rank of popularity and have lower production costs. Students could then
review details to have a better and deeper understanding of the problem than that
provided by TV alone.
