Relation of moral reasoning ability to empathy and work experience of nurses in Pranangklao Hospital, Nonthaburi province
Abstract:
This quantitative research aims to study (a) the relationship between moral
reasoning and working experience; (b) the relationship between moral reasoning and
empathy; and (c) the relationship between moral reasoning, working experience and
empathy of nurse. The study subjects were nurses in Pranangkhlao Hospital,
Nonthaburi Province. The instrument was a questionnaire with 3 parts: Demographic
information, Test of Empathy, and Test of Moral Reasoning.
To meet the objectives, four hypotheses were formulated. They are (a) Nurses
with more working experience have a higher level of moral reasoning; (b) Nurses
with higher level of empathy have a higher level of moral reasoning; (c) Nurses with
more working experience have a higher level of empathy; and (d) Working experience
and level of empathy correlate positively to moral reasoning. They were tested using
Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient and Multiple Regression and it was
found that none of the hypotheses was confirmed.
It is recommended that, in further research, the research instrument should
include a more elaborate test of other factors that may be relevant to the level of moral
reasoning such as work satisfaction and social experience.
