Factors affecting stress and coping behavior of women prisoners : a case study of the Central Women's Correctional Institution, Bangkok

Abstract: This thesis was to investigate levels of stress among woman prisoners in correctional institutions; to investigate factors affecting their coping behaviors and to investigate the relationship between levels of stress and coping behaviors. The subject were 345 randomly selected women prisoners of Thai nationality sentenced to imprisonment in the Central Women Correctional Institutions, Bangkok. A questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection and statistical applications were percentage, means, standard deviation, and Multiple Regression Analysis. The findings are summarized as follows: 1. Most subjects were 26-30 years with secondary level of education, married and still connected to their husbands. Most were vendors and held deposit 1,501-2,000 bath with the correctional institution for expenses. Most had been sentenced to prison for transgressing the Narcotics Act and confined for more than 73 months. Most were moderately satisfied with the environment and their living in the correctional institution. 2. Stress was related to both personal and environmental factors. In general, longer duration of imprisonment were associated with greater stress. 3. People who had higher education and/or were married had better coping behavior. Having a long duration of confinement, having low satisfaction toward environment and living in the institution were related to poor coping behavior. It is recommended that the counseling team be provided to give advice to the women prisoners. There should be orientations for understanding and how to behave during the confinement for the new prisoners, to raise their understanding, and knowledge, to make them adaptable and able to lead the life of imprisonment.

Abstract: การศึกษาวิจัยในครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาถึงระดับความเครียดของผู้ต้องขังหญิง เพื่อศึกษาถึงพฤติกรรมการเผชิญความเครียดของผู้ต้องขังหญิง และเพื่อศึกษาถึงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างระดับความเครียดกับรูปแบบพฤติกรรมการเผชิญความเครียดของผู้ต้องขังหญิง กลุ่มตัวอย่าง ได้แก่ นักโทษเด็ดขาดหญิงที่มีสัญชาติไทยและถูกกักขังอยู่ในทัณฑสถานหญิงกลาง กรุงเทพมหานคร จำนวน 345 ราย เก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลโดยใช้แบบสอบถาม สถิติที่ใช้ในการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูล ได้แก่ ร้อยละ ค่าเฉลี่ยเลขคณิต ส่วนเบี่ยงเบนมาตรฐานและการวิเคราะห์การถดถอยพหุคูณ (Multiple Regression Analysis) ผลการวิจัยสรุปได้ ดังนี้ 1. กลุ่มตัวอย่างส่วนใหญ่มีอายุระหว่าง 26-30 ปี มีการศึกษาระดับมัธยมศึกษา สมรสแล้วและยังติดต่อกันอยู่ ประกอบอาชีพค้าขาย (พ่อค้า/แม่ค้า) มีเงินฝากที่ได้รับจากญาติเพื่อเป็นค่าใช้จ่ายในเรือนจำประมาณ 1,501-2,000 บาท เป็นผู้ต้องขังเด็ดขาด กระทำความผิดเกี่ยวกับพระราชบัญญัติยาเสพติดให้โทษ เข้ามาอยู่ในเรือนจำเป็นระยะเวลา 73 เดือนขึ้นไป (6 ปีขึ้นไป) และมีความพึงพอใจต่อสภาพแวดล้อมและความเป็นอยู่ในเรือนจำอยู่ในระดับปานกลาง 2. ส่วนปัจจัยที่มีอิทธิผลต่อความเครียด ได้แก่ ปัจจัยส่วนบุคคลและปัจจัยสภาพแวดล้อมทางด้านระยะเวลาที่เข้ามาอยู่ในเรือนจำหรือระยะเวลาที่ต้องโทษและประเภทคดีมีความสัมพันธ์กับระดับความเครียดของผู้ต้องขังหญิง 3. ปัจจัยที่มีผลต่อพฤติกรรมการเผชิญความเครียด ซึ่งแบ่งออกเป็น 2 ด้าน คือ 1.) ปัจจัยทางด้านบวกประกอบด้วยระดับการศึกษา สถานภาพการสมรส 2.) ปัจจัยทางด้านลบ ประกอบด้วย ระยะเวลาที่เข้ามาอยู่ในเรือนจำ ประเภทผู้ต้องขัง ความพึงพอใจต่อสภาพแวดล้อมและความเป็นอยู่ในเรือนจำ มีความสัมพันธ์กับพฤติกรรมการเผชิญความเครียดของผู้ต้องขังหญิง โดยมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ 0.05 ข้อเสนอแนะจากการวิจัย ควรมีการจัดให้มีหน่วยบริการให้คำปรึกษา เพื่อให้ผู้ต้องขังที่มีปัญหาในเรือนจำได้เข้ามาปรึกษา โดยอาจจัดให้มีขึ้นในแต่ละแดนอย่างชัดเจน รวมทั้งควรจัดให้มีโครงการให้ความรู้ความเข้าใจที่ถูกต้องในการปฏิบัติตัวในขณะอยู่ในเรือนจำให้แก่ผู้ต้องขังเข้าใหม่ เพื่อเพิ่มความเข้าใจ ความรู้และคำแนะนำในการปฏิบัติตัวที่ถูกต้องเพื่อให้ผู้ต้องขังสามารถปรับตัวและได้ทราบวิธีการดำเนินชีวิตในเรือนจำ
