Importance of computer competencies in the selection of entry-level managers and entry-level office support staff : an exploratory study of various business firms in Thailand
Abstract:
This is an exploratory studied which investigates the significance of computer literacy skills and computer applications knowledge (computer competencies) in the selection of entry-level managers and entry-level office support staff in companies operating in Thailand.
The study focused on two central research questions:
(1) How important are computer competencies as criteria in the selection of entry-level managers and entry-level office support staff for companies operating in Thailand?
(2) Are there any differences in the selection methods used to access computer competencies of entry-level managers and entry-level office support staff for domestic and multi-national companies operating in Thailand?.
A questionnaire was distributed to the human resource managers of a stratifies sample of 710 companies operating in the Bangkok, Thailand metropolitan area. A total of 188 usable questionnaires were received: 85 questionnaires (24.3% rate) from domestic companies and 103 questionnaires (28.6% rate) from multi-national companies.
This study find that computer competencies are important in the selection of both entry-level managers and entry-level office support staff. Furthermore, it finds that there are several differences in the selection methods used to assess the computer competencies of these two categories of employees. T-tests indicate that of the six specific computer competency dimensions, only two are found to have significant differences between entry-level managers and entry-level office support staff: Creating documents & multimedia materials is significantly more important for the selection of entry-level office support staff than for entry-level managers and understanding Computer networks is found to be more important for entry level managers.
Five of the seven specific selection methods (techniques) were found to be significantly different between entry-level managers and entry-level office support staff. Background checks of previous employers and interviews by higher-level managers are relatively more important for selection of entry-level managers. Written tests, tests taken on computers, and demonstrations of computer skills are relatively more important for entry-level office support staff.
This study also investigated the potential impact of organizational location (multinational/domestic), organizational size (large/medium and small), and industry (manufacturing/non-manufacturing). With few exceptions, these dimensions had no bearing on the relative importance of computer criteria or upon computer selection methods for the two categories of jobs.
