Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation was to assess how the usage of strategic planning relates to the financial performance (profitability and growth) of firms. A strategic planning system provides for the advanced rational decision making necessary to promote effective achievement of the goals and objectives of an organization. As such it includes a formalized corporate process specifically designed for the development and implementation of strategic plans.
A mail questionnaire based upon previous research was developed and completed by a sample of 120 executive managers in Thai manufacturing firms listed in the Thailand Company Information 2001-2002 directory. ANOVA and Regression Analysis were used to test research hypotheses.
The research hypotheses regarding strategic planning systems and financial performance were all supported. Profitability, performance, and growth were all significantly greater for Thai enterprises whose executive managers perform comprehensive strategic planning than those Thai enterprises whose executive mangers do not perform comprehensive strategic planning. Four competitive strategies were analyzed for moderating effects. Cost leadership was the only competitive strategy that showed a moderating effect on the relationship between strategic planning systems and financial performance, while quality strategy, speed strategy, and customization strategy did not show such a moderating effect.
The findings of the present study add empirical support to the perceived inherent value of formal strategic planning as a means for improving a firms financial performance. Increased emphasis on formal strategic planning systems activities appeared to be an effective method of achieving improved financial performance for this samples of 120 Thai manufacturing firms. Thus, the results support the conclusion that executive managers in developing countries can influence the financial performance in their organizations through the utilization of strategic planning methods.
