The study on probabilistic mathematical reasoning of secondary school students with different mathematics learning achievement and backgrounds in schools under the Department of General Education, Eduational Region Eleven
Abstract:
The purposes of the research were 1) to study the level of mathematical reasoning of secondary school students with different mathematics learning achievements and 2) to study the level of mathematical reasoning of secondary school students with different backgrounds. The subjects were 400 Mathayom suksa three students and 365 Mathayom suksa six students from secondary schools in Nakornratsrima Province, Chaiyaphum Province, Surin Province, Burirum Province and Srisaket Province in academic year 2004. The research instrument was the level of mathematical reasoning test. The data were analized by using frequency and Chi-square test. The results of this research revealed that : 1) Most of Mathayom suksa three students had the mathematical reasoning at level 4. Students with high and medium mathematics learning achievements had mathematical reasoning at level 4, while those with low mathematics learning achievements had mathematical reasoning at level 3. Students with high, medium and low mathematics learning achievements had different mathematical reasoning at 0.05 level of significance. Most of Mathayom suksa six students had the mathematical reasoning at level 3. Students with high, medium and low mathematics learning achievements had mathematical reasoning at level 3. Students with high, medium and low mathematics learning achievements had different mathematical reasoning at 0.05 level of significance. 2) Mathayom suksa three students who had mathematical reasoning at level 4 were girls, students with 2 sisters/brothers, students whose fathers or mothers had freelance occupation, students whose fathers educated at higher level, students whose mothers educated at primary level, and students in urban schools. Students with different school sites had different mathematical reasoning levels at 0.05 level of significance. Mathayom suksa six students who had mathematical reasoning at level 3 were girls, students with 2 sisters/brothers, students whose fathers or mothers had freelance occupation, students whose fathers educated at higher level, students whose mothers educated at primary level, and students in urban schools. Students with different school sites had different mathematical reasoning levels at 0.05 level of significance
