A Qualitative Study: Peer Assessment in Thai University Health Science Cooperative Learning Groups
Abstract:
Project Oriented Problem Based Learning (POPBL) was employed in a naturally existing Thai university class,
English for Health Sciences. Peer assessment is an essential aspect of the POPBL process, in which group members
assess each member's contribution to the group goal or task. This qualitative study examined Cooperative Learning (CL) as
an instructional model in which teams of students worked on structured task such as group projects. The research
questions investigated the attitudes and practices of student rated peer assessment accuracy, reliability and identified the
cultural antecedents and attitudes towards group members "free-rider", who did little work, yet received the same credit as
those who did a great deal of work. The research implications for POPBL coordinators in Asian cultures, provides insights
and guidelines for students involved in peer assessment. Finally, the insights and applications into peer friendly protocols in
peer assessment in the PBL process positively affected student compliance.
